Sash Window Painters in Worcester

Faithful Decorators are sash window painters in Worcester, covering Victorian terraces in St Johns and Barbourne, Edwardian villas on Battenhall Road, Georgian townhouses in the city centre, and period properties across WR1, WR2, and WR5.

Stripping Back Built-Up Paint
The most common problem with sash windows in Worcester’s Victorian housing stock is excessive paint build-up. Decades of overcoating without stripping cause the sashes to stick, the glazing putty to crack, and moisture to collect in the joints.
We strip existing coats back to sound timber on windows where build-up has reached a critical level. On Victorian sash windows in Barbourne and St Johns, stripping is often the longest part of the job.
Glazing Putty Repair
Failing putty is the primary route for moisture entry into sash window timber. When putty cracks or detaches from the rebate, rainwater tracks directly into the joint between the glass and the frame.
We rake out all loose and cracked putty to a sound base. We re-point with linseed oil-based glazing compound on original timber sash windows.
Timber Hardener and Rot Repair
Minor rot on sash window rails and sills is treated with two-part timber hardener before priming. For more significant rot we cut out the affected section and splice in new timber, matching the profile of the original rail or sill.
Properties in flood-risk areas of St Johns WR2 and along the Severn flood plain frequently show accelerated sill and lower-rail rot.
Priming and Finishing
Stripped and repaired sash windows receive an appropriate timber primer before any topcoat. On original nineteenth-century timber we prefer oil-based primer for its superior penetration and adhesion.
Finish coats are applied in exterior gloss or exterior satin. Sashes are checked to run freely in the frame before we leave. We do not paint sashes shut.
Battenhall Road and South Worcester
The Victorian detached villas on Battenhall Road and surrounding streets in WR5 are among Worcester’s finest period properties. Many have original sash windows across multiple elevations, including bay window sashes and upper-storey windows.
We coordinate the sash window scope with the full exterior painting programme where required. See our Victorian property painting page for the full exterior scope.

Our Sash Window Painting Process
1. Site Assessment
We inspect every sash window in scope, noting paint build-up, putty condition, and timber health. All findings are included in the written quote.
2. Stripping and Preparation
Build-up is stripped back to sound timber where needed. Loose and failing putty is raked out. Soft or rotten timber is treated or replaced.
3. Putty Re-Pointing
New linseed oil-based glazing compound is applied, shaped, and allowed to skim over before priming. We do not prime wet putty.
4. Priming
Bare timber and re-pointed putty receive the appropriate primer. End-grain sections receive two primer coats.
5. Finish Coats and Inspection
Two finish coats, sanded lightly between coats. Sashes run-checked before we leave. Walk-through with you before close-out.
Sash Window Painting Costs in Worcester
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01905 975332 for a precise quote.
Stripping Requirement
Windows with heavy paint build-up require mechanical or chemical stripping before priming. This adds time per window but is essential to a durable result.
Putty and Timber Condition
Windows with extensive putty failure or significant rot require more repair work before painting can begin. We assess this at the site visit.
Number of Windows and Access
Ground-floor windows are straightforward. First-floor and second-floor windows on Barbourne and Battenhall Road properties may need scaffold or tower access.
Typical Price Ranges
Single sash window, good condition: £150 to £280. Strip and full putty re-point: £280 to £450. Full house, six to eight windows, Barbourne terrace: £1,400 to £2,800. Ten or more windows, Battenhall villa: £3,000 to £5,500.
