Why Lime Plaster Needs Breathable Paint
The walls of Georgian townhouses near Foregate Street and The Tything, and cottages in Claines and Hallow, were built with lime plaster on a lath or masonry base. Lime plaster is breathable and slightly flexible. It accommodates the seasonal movement of old walls and allows moisture vapour to pass through it.
Standard modern emulsion contains vinyl or acrylic compounds. These form a non-breathable film over the surface. When applied to lime plaster, moisture is trapped behind it. The paint film eventually blisters, peels, or causes the surface to detach.
This failure is often misdiagnosed as rising damp. In most cases it is a paint problem, not a structural one. The solution is a breathable paint product.
Limewash for Exterior Walls
Limewash is a suspension of slaked lime in water, sometimes with natural pigment added. Applied to exterior rendered or stone walls, it allows moisture to pass through while providing a durable, UV-resistant decorative finish.

Traditional distemper is a chalk and glue size paint used on lime plaster ceilings and walls from the Georgian period through the mid-twentieth century. It produces an exceptionally flat, chalky finish. This is the correct interior look for Georgian and Regency period properties.
Distemper is water-soluble. It is not appropriate for high-traffic or washable surfaces. It is best suited to ceilings, high-ceilinged reception rooms, and formal rooms where surface traffic is low.
Identifying Incompatible Coatings
